(1921-2006) The only Flemish volunteer in the SS Flandern to have been awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. He fought in the Battle of Leningrad and the Battle of Narva. During Narva, he single-handedly destroyed eleven tanks. He was injured and then later awarded the Infantry Assault Badge, the Wound Badge in gold, and the 1st and 2nd class Iron Cross. After the war, he returned to Belgium and was tried. He was symbolically convicted to death, which corresponds to life imprisonment. He was released in 1950 and participated in 'amnesty marches', advocating for 'heroes of the Eastern Front' to be released. He is known as 'The Last Knight of Flanders'.
