ARTIST; ANDRE DERAIN. Original Frame and Matting: Artist Medium: Lino Cut (plate Signed) - Size Framed: 13x17"
Born: 1880 - 1954
Brief Artist Background:
Andr Derain was one of the leaders of the original Fauve group. Persuaded to devote himself to painting by Vlaminck, Derain and Vlaminck shared an interest in building paintings out of strong colors. Through his friendship with Matisse, Derain drew Vlaminck, a more resolute outsider, into the Fauvist moment, and the basic grouping of artists was completed. After several years, the artists involved went off in different directions. For Derain, that meant working through Cezanne and following the Cubist innovations of Picasso and Braque;
Derain is among the world's greatest print-makers:
"L'Enfant": An original Lino engraving signed in the lower right with the official stamp of the Derain estate. A masterful work, full of grace and beauty, L'Enfant was released by the widow of Andre Derain after his death. It has been pulled in two colors- red and black- on heavy Rives paper. Derain's work, for the most part, may be described as controlled. His preference for earth colors makes his art warm and bright. This is particularly true in his lithographs, etchings, linos and woodcuts- and especially in L'Enfant where flowing arabesques create a dynamic view of the three figures.
COA: Gallery Signed 1974
