RARE c1919 WWI Theatre Program Germany Third Army Cohan
This is a rare vintage circa 1919 theatre program from Germany from the 'Third Army Stock Company' Y. M. C. A. Part of the 'Over There Theatre League' and efforts with George Cohan as President, under the direction of Dorothy Donnelly. These officers and enlisted men were ministering angels that lightened the heart, naturally heavy from war obstacles. The play is Seven Keys to Baldpate, George M. Cohan's successful mysterious melodramatic farce. Staged by Harrington Reynolds. Starring Harrington Reynolds, Helen Scott, Eugene Mcgovern. Dorothy Donnelly is best known to the American play going public for her performance in the title of "Madame X." Long one of the organizers and leaders of the Stage Women's War Relief, Miss Donnelly was slated to go overseas as a dramatic coach and organizer of soldier drama activity as soon as war conditions permitted. Unfortunately her plans were subject to the same delays that unavoidably deterred the Over There Theatre League, but Miss Donnelly left on September 17, 1918, and spent in France and Germany almost a year of untiring effort which made her one of the best known and best loved figures in the American Army. March, 1919 - no fewer than 132 soldier shows, with a total personnel of 127 officers and 2656 enlisted men, were already playing in the Third Army. During March, these shows gave 2640 performances. They depended almost wholly on the Y for costumes, and any hour in any day you would find the office of the Costume Department full of dough boys trying on a soubrette or Pierrot or "vamp" or ingenue garbs and getting themselves pinned up. The Y head field coach, Miss Wenner, reported in March 16 additional soldier shows forming under her supervision. And under the personal direction of Miss Dorothy Donnelly, of the Y Entertainment Department, the Third Army Stock Company had begun its career. SIZE: 6" x 11".
