RARE TINTYPE OF UNION WINTER QUARTERS.
RARE TINTYPE OF UNION WINTER QUARTERS. An intriguing outdoor sixth-plate tintype offering a rare candid glimpse of military life in the field. The reason for this photograph has been lost to time but an incredible wealth of detail remains frozen in the plate. The transient nature of the encampment is suggested by the haphazard layout of the canvas tents, the barrels and the scattered horse tack. The relaxed atmosphere and lack of visible weapons further suggests somewhere behind the lines. The subjects appear to be an arbitrary mix of company-grade officers (two at center), uniformed enlisted men, and several blacks undoubtedly employed to care for the horses and lone army mule. In an era of rigid photography this image conveys a fluidity that defies the otherwise mundane subject matter. The consignor has suggested Virginia, somewhere on the Peninsula as a possible location. Within the mat lines the plate is perfect with slight sepia tones. The image is bright for an outdoor view with dirty cover glass. Housed in a damaged black gutta percha case. Near EXC.
