RARE Spencer/Springfield .50 Cal Repeating Rifle
This lot features a Extremely Rare example of a Spencer/Springfiled .50 Caliber Repeating Carbine. The U. S. Springfield Armory only made 1108 of these long .50 caliber repeating rifles with 32 ½” barrels intended for infantry use by changing the Spencer carbine barrel and forend for a longer barrel and full length wood forend secured by two barrel bands and fitted with a cleaning rod. This alteration was done in 1871 and issued to troops during the early days of the Indian Wars. Because of the limited number made by Springfield, few have survived to the present. This is a fine example that still correctly retains the original Spencer carbine stock with sling ring bar, correct Springfield rear sight and Stabler magazine cut-off switch ahead of the trigger, correct magazine in the butt plate and even retains a good inspector cartouche in the stock. All metal surfaces are uncleaned and show no abuse or evidence of rust, deep naturally aged patina, excellent markings and mechanics, cleaning rod intact, forend only shows a probably arsenal repair to the wood which is minor and does not detract from the overall appearance or desirability of this extremely rare Indian Wars Spencer repeating rifle. Antique firearm. NO FFL transfer or NICS background check required. Serial number is 29710
