RARE STAFFORDSHIRE FIGURE OF T. SMITH & WM. COLLIER. A story of poaching & murder in North Staff...
RARE STAFFORDSHIRE FIGURE OF T. SMITH & WM. COLLIER. A story of poaching & murder in North Staffordshire. This painted figural group tells the story of Wm. Collier, a poacher & tenant farmer who murdered Thomas Smith after Smith caught him poaching. Collier was hanged for his crime at a public execution on Aug. 7th, 1866. When the first attempt to hang Collier failed due to the knot slipping he was lead him back up the scaffolding and this time hung successfully. An interesting historical figural group with both men, a dog and 2 game birds. Very well painted with great detail and colors, 13" high. Near perfect with very tiny chips on applied floral.
