Rare PAIR of Doulton Lambeth Impasta Vases signed with the monogram RK. The initials of Rosa Keen. The base also has the Lambeth mark plus the date 1884 The outer bodies with decoration in aquaramine blue with sprays of white and yellow apple blossom and green and brown foliage. The base section is an earthy brown and this colour is repeated in a fine line round the rim.
Note: The unusual effect of impasta was achieved by colouring the raw clay and adding a small amount of relief to add to the sense of reality. Impasta colours were browns, yellows greens and blues. The effect was quite lovely and very tactile to the touch. Impasta invention coincided with one of the most artistic periods of the Lambeth Pottery. The first piece was brought out of the kiln during a visit from Princess Alexandra (later Queen) in 1879.
In overall perfect condition, with no chips or damage anywhere, no evidence of any restoration.
Dimensions: Width: at widest 4.25? (10.5cm). Height: 8.75? (23cm).
