RARE NEW HAMPSHIRE MODEL 1808 MILITIA MUSKET.
Cal. 70. NSN. Bbl. 44 1/2" rnd. w/ no markings. 59.5" Overall. Charleville style lock w/ integral iron pan marked at tail w/ vertically stamped chicken legged eagle & “EXETER” below. This rare example was made by Joshua & Charles Barstow. Few examples of his complete original muskets are known w/ his distinct chicken legged eagle. Peter Schmidt in his excellent text on early US Military Muskets reprints communications from 1808-1814 of difficulties Barstow had in delivering guns, which by 1814 had produced 2,400 muskets, most delivered to Fort Constitution at Portsmouth, NH. CONDITION: very good overall. Appears complete & original. Vent is oversized but lock appears original in Flint configuration. Stock is sound & well fit w/ indiscernible pair of initials stamped rear of trigger guard. Mechanically fine w/ dirty, smooth bore. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of Gary Parietti. (01-19299/JS). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,000.
