An Extremely Rare Yew Wood, Boxwood, Arbutus Irish Marquetry Davenport or Desk of museum quality, lavishly decorated with shamrocks, thistles, ivies, and rustic scenes. The rising central lid opens to a desk interior with six inlaid drawers and cubby holes; the lid is inlaid underneath with an Irish harp, to one side is a hinged single door revealing pull out drawers again with lavish inlaid decoration above this is a secret pull out sliding drawer with inkwell and pen compartments. Circa, last half of 19th Century.
Note Killarney Ware: Small items of Furniture and Writing Slopes etc. were made in Killarney Ireland using this local wood known as Arbutus (from the Strawberry Tree) peculiar to this area of Kerry during the 19th Century and later. Much of this early furniture is now attributed to firms Arthur Jones, J.O'Connor and J.Egan or their successors in Killarney. The inlay depictions have naive charm usually in their portrayal of animals, rustic nostalgic cottages and ruins such as Muckross Abbey or Glena Cottage. Delightful piece of rare Irish Furniture in very good condition.
In overall superb untouched condition with no losses, nice original patination. There is an age crack through the tooled leather area.
Dimensions: Height: (overall) 38" (97cm). Width: 25.25" (64cm). Depth: 25" (63cm).
