RARE & FINE “1ST VA CAV” MARKED FIRST MODEL
VIRGINIA MANUFACTORY CAVALRY SABER ALTERED FOR CIVIL WAR. Beautiful example of the 1st model Virginia Manufactory cavalry saber made in Richmond Virginia just prior to the War of 1812 & then altered for modern light cavalry use just prior to the Civil War by Ames on contract to the state of Virginia. Alteration consists of shortening & slenderizing blade, substituting a brass mounted light cavalry iron scabbard. Markings on spine of blade are crisp “1’ VA REGT”. Regimentally marked 1st models in fine condition are rarely seen. CONDITION: very good to fine overall. Blade overall bright gray w/ scattered staining & pitting, crisp regimental markings. Hilt & scabbard have iron patina, brass mounts have a dark chocolate patina. Retains most of its original leather. (02-14523/JS). $5,000-6,000.
