This is a set of RARE Civil War era horse hoof branding irons. Because horses and mules were such an important part of the artillery units, an identification system was developed to keep record of the animals. Each unit had a team of farriers whose purpose was to care for the horses and mules including shoeing, trimming, and medical treatment. The "Preston" system was developed to brand the animals' hooves for identification. This is a RARE complete set of the irons used by one of these regiments. These irons came from Ft. Laramie in Wyoming. The set includes numbers 0-8 with an extra 5 (The 6 and 9 are the same iron). Each one is made from an iron handle and rod. The actual brands are made from copper. This is a set from later in the war. Later in the war, the set was reduced to 9 irons as the 6 and 9 were interchangeable. The set of Civil War horse hoof branding irons is in good condition. Very RARE Civil War artifacts. Each iron measures approximately 19.5" long.
