RIFLE, JOSEPH WELSHANS OF YORK, PA. Cal. 50. Overall length 60”, 4-1/2” x 1-5/8” buttplate. 45” Full oct. unsigned rifled bbl. This rifle has curly maple stock & nicely checkered wrist. The characteristics of the gun are correct for the York County Pennsylvania area. The incised carving under the rear of the cheek piece is attributed to gunsmith Joseph Welshans. The patchbox on the gun is the type commonly used by York County gunsmith F. Zorger & it is assumed that this was installed during the guns period of use. The stock checkering has a nice silver hear shaped inlay at the top of the wrist. CONDITION: forestock has some professional repair & the brass toeplate is missing 1 1/2” on its length.
