First half 20th century, American. This unique diorama nicely carved and painted depicting a full length half section of a period whaling ship from above decks to the keel. This example illustrates the activities involved from cutting of the blubber and boiling it to convert to oil. Also a true-to-life rendition of captain's and officer's quarters, crews quarter in the forecastle, the storage areas of the stern, and a complete view of the holds in which are stored the barrels in which the finished product was transported home. All mounted within a lucite and wood framed case. SIZE: 19" h x 69" l x 9-1/2" w. PROVENANCE: Formerly on display at the Lahama (Lahaine) Maui Whaling Museum. CONDITION: In exceptionally good condition, in need of simple repositioning of some elements within after it has reached its final destination. Very good overall. 7-70302
