RARE CONFEDERATE BURGER & BROTHER CAMP KNIFE.
15” Overall, 9.5” clip point blade, 1 5/8” wide, .2” thick, 3.5” brass rounded ends cross guard. Knife is maker marked: “BURGER & BROTHERS” in arc above “RICHMOND VA” in larger separate straight die. As noted in “Confederate Bowie Knives” by Melton, Phillips, & Sexton “Burger & Bros, "camp" bowie is the most seldom encountered variety today, not because it was made in few numbers, but because of an extremely high attrition rate from postwar use. This size knife was handy for just about anything…” This variety of “RICHMOND VA” marking was not available when the book was published, but it is absolutely original. The blade exhibits a spine bevel that extends link the blade almost to guard which is only seen by this particular manufacturer. The flat wood slab grips are retained by 2 brass & one iron pin, which is different than the rounded slab seen most often. CONDITION: very good overall, blade is overall gray w/ scattered staining & light pitting, marking is mostly discernible though the 1st letter in each line is weak. Cross guard has been cleaned & has a light mustard patina, wood grips are well fit w/ remnants of varnish. (02-14526/JS). $8,000-12,000.
