<b>Notes: </b>"In the early 1950s, Wirkkala created a series of wooden platters and bowls in plywood. Wirkkala used the material in an entirely different way. He took a piece of plywood and turned it ninety degrees, converting what is normally an ugly edge into the decorative surface. Wirkkala had perceived a visual relationship between nature and this half-natural and half-man-made material." -Martin Eidelberg, p 156 Wirkkala won a grand prize at the 1951 Milan IX Triennale of Design for his wood pieces and one of his leaf platters was named most beautiful object of 1951 by HOUSE BEAUTIFUL.
