AUGUSTA GA DUELING OR TARGET PISTOLS IN FURNITURE CASING. Cal. 54. NSN. This unique pair of pistols mounted in a small cabinet originated from the late John Montague’s collection of Southern duelers.
16” overall, 10” octagonal barrels engraved on top flat “E H ROGERS AUGUSTA, GEO”. Back action lock engraved “E H ROGERS”. Bottom of barrels are English proofed and stamped “E. Smith”. Locks, hammers, and breeches scroll & edge engraved, German silver mounted, checkered walnut grips, brass tipped ebony ramrods. Not only is this the only pair of Rogers pistols known, they are the only known pair of antebellum Georgia pistols known according to accompanying letter from the late GA firearm authority Dick Kennedy who wrote the earliest monographs on antebellum Georgia gun manufacture. Pistols are housed in bottom drawer of old Southern dovetailed constructed oak & maple chest measuring 24” x 12” x 12”. Pistols are “cased” in 11.5” x 23” x 2.75” drawer compartmentalized, and green baize lined just like any other pistol case of the era. Compartments contain two-piece wood mallet, brass & wood loading tool, brass & wood cleaning tool, screwdriver, nipple wrench, balls, enameled tin of caps, decorated 3 cavity powder flask, cylindrical horn lubricant container, and improvised wicker covered glass flask for powder. The hinged top reveals a fluffy neck white shirt with what appears to be blood stains according to the late well known collector Don Bryan’s letter, the shirt has old ink inscription written in old brown ink “Sam’l Fales No. 8 ’46 of unknown meaning, wrapped in shirt is quarter plate tintype of unknown gentleman wearing similar shirt, along with frayed earthtone coverlet. This is among the most interesting pistol casing you will ever see. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Several letters of provenance. CONDITION: pistols are matching and very good overall, pistol accessories are also very good. The small chest has dark patina, both brass bale handles complete and functionable, back edge of drawer is replaced. There is 12” high stand with wheels apparently added at later date which has been stained to match and has loose joint but easily repaired or removed.
