RARE AND DESIRABLE longbilled dowitcher in XOC wi
RARE AND DESIRABLE longbilled dowitcher in XOC with head dovetailed onto the body. Wings are outlined with an incised cut and there is a little rise carved at the top of the tail. There is a little wear the surface but the paint is tight and in very good condition with no flaking. The original bill is mortised to the head. Fitted with tiny high quality glass eyes. Found with 4 others decades ago in a camp in South Harpswell, Maine. Made by a highly skilled cabinet maker. There has been speculation that these decoys were made by the same maker as the goose in figure 3 on page 8 in the front of Adele Earnest book "The Art of the Decoy. On page 93 of that same book two examples of dowitchers by this same maker are shown that illustrate how dovetailed neck and head slide off for storage and/or easy assembly in the field. Each bird and head is numbered for matching heads and bodies. This decoy was part of the 1987 Peabody Museum American Bird Decoy exhibit in Salem Massachusetts. Also pictured in a Decoy Magazine article about the Peabody Museum exhibit and in an article in the New York Times about the same show. Museum quality. (decoy)
