RARE AMERICAN CLOCKWORK GIRL SKIPPING ROPE.
A most unusual form and only one of 2 known examples to exist! Attributed to Automatic Toy Works this clockwork toy from the later part of the 19th century feature a china girl attached by a bar to the center lithographed pillar which contains the clockwork mechanism. The girl skipping rope example is seldom found but this particular version was not even pictured in Blair Whitton's book on clockwork toys. The center pedestal is a lithographed japanned tin featuring the girl skipping rope, a seated oriental lady with parasol and a young man with a sword. Toy appears to be in all original as found condition with possible exception of a missing top finial to the top wood enclosure. China doll is dressed in a brown muslin/cotton outfit with trims and a bevy of undergarments. Due to the action of the toy and frailty of a 120+ year old fabric, possible aged replacement of figure's outfit. Accompanying this toy is a replica catalog cut from the Strasburger, Pfeiffer & Co. catalog featuring this toy. SIZE: To top of pillar 5-3/4" h. CONDITION: Overall condition as stated above. 1-13634
