Ink on paper roll, featuring Chinese calligraphy in semi-cursive script, signed and attr. Rao Zongyi (Chinese, 1917-2018), inscribed with 2 artist seals, 138 x 46 cm. Rao Zongyi was a Chinese painter, calligrapher, and scholar known for his expertise on Chinese culture. Born Jao Tsung-I on August 9, 1917 in Chaozhou, China, he was mostly taught by his family rather than through any formal education. Despite this, he became a versatile and profoundly knowledgeable scholar, teaching musicology, archaeology, and art history, among other subjects. Rao worked as a lecturer and researcher in mainland China before moving to Hong Kong in 1949. He was widely known for his work as a scholar, and held lectures in Japan, France, and the United States. The artist’s most celebrated publications include Oracle Bone Diviners of the Yin Dynasty and a translation of the Babylonian epic Enûma Elish. In 1997, Rao was given the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. The artist died at the age of 100, on February 6, 2018 in Hong Kong, China.
