Charles Griffin and Company, 1869FIRST EDITION, many text illustrs, pp xvi,588, 4(ads), cr 8vo, original cloth : light foxing of preliminary leaves, binding rubbed at corners, inside joints strengthened : very good.The rare first edition of an important textbook on mechanical engineering by this Scottish civil engineer, one of a series by him which passed through many editions, contributing greatly to the advancement of their subject. Intended as a work of general reference and practical instruction, on the lathe, and the various mechanical pursuits followed by amateurs. Vol.III. Abrasive and miscellaneous processes, which cannot be accomplished with cutting tools. Published by Holtzapfftel & Co., 1850. FIRST EDITION, with some 180 illustrations, pages viii, (8), 1026-1477, (2, blank), (16, illustrated Holtzapffel adverts), 8vo, original brown cloth : a very good to nice copy.Vol 3 only of this standard work by a brilliant mechanician. Though it was intended that it run to six volumes, only five were published. This third volume includes a cummulative index to the first three volumes and separate chapters on lapidary work, gem and glass engraving, and, varnishing and lackering (sic).
