300. AYN RAND (1905 - 1982) American writer who espoused her philosophy of objectivism and "rational selfishness" is such novels as Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead. An excessively rare and important document, a full quarto page of Rand's holograph working manuscript of a passage from her landmark novel, Atlas Shrugged! The manuscript is essentially identical to the published text, with but a few words differing between the two, leading us to believe that this leaf was from the final manuscript hand-written by Rand. The text, which bears many excisions and additions, is from the latter part of the novel, and describes a conversation between Dagny Taggert and one of her adversaries. In full: "See that they've got us hogtied? Don't you see that they're holding us by the throat? Don't you know what they can do to us - through this Railroad Poll, or through the Unification Board, or through the moratorium on our bonds?' `I knew that two years ago.' He was shaking; there was some formless, desperate, almost superstitious quality in his terror, out of proportion to the dangers he named. She felt curiously certain that it came from something deeper than his fear of the bureaucrats' reprisal, that the reprisal was the only identification of it which he would permit himself to know, a reassuring identification which hid him from the truth". Rand's twenty or so additions and deletions also give the reader an indication of the author's train of thought and writing technique as she wrote her most famous novel. Fine condition. Only one other instance of the sale of an Atlas Shrugged manuscript has come to our attention, in 1995 when a small grouping of several pages of text were sold to a single buyer at approx. $8,000 per page.$10,000-15,000
