RACIST STROBRIDGE MINSTREL POSTER. This poster is 30.5 x 39.25" and has been professionally restored and mounted on linen. The poster is entitled "Primrose & West's Minstrels." It has 3 panels: on the left, an African village, with a ribbon under it "The Origin in African Wilds;" the central oval shows a bride & groom dancing at a wedding and says "The Present 'Dancin' Wid De Bride'" in the oval and "'Evolution' of the 'Song & Dance'" on the ribbon under it; and a couple and several others on the river with a steamboat in background and "On a Mississippi Flat Boat 'Befor' de War'" on the ribbon under this section. Strobridge Lith. Co., Cincinnati - New York -&- London, n.d. George Primrose and William West combined their minstrel shows in the last quarter of the 19th century, and the Primrose & West show ran until the end of the century. Professionally mounted on linen with old folds visible on close inspection, as are a few repaired margin tears, inpainting where paper was lost. A striking poster.
