Throughout her oeuvre, Rachel Whiteread transforms the intimate territory of our private lives into intensely physical forms that become haunting and enigmatic monuments to the everyday. She has embarked on the exploration of negative spaces below, inside, and around pre-existing objects - spaces beneath tables and chairs, inside cupboards, and around shelves lined with books - in her search, as she explains "to bring unregistered and forgotten spaces into the world" (Rachel Whiteread quoted in A. Rose, RACHEL WHITEREAD, London, 1997, p. 30).
UNTITLED (CLEAR), 1991, is the cast of the space inside a window. The original window and frame have been displaced in the casting process, leaving behind an indexical trace of its shape and surface. The sculpture that emerges from this template is in a sense a phantom recollection of the original window frame. Whiteread emphasizes this distinction by propping the present work against the wall. This efficient gesture extracts the sculpture from its own mundane history and repositions it as a work of art. Symbolizing the physical transition between one's indoor personal space and the outdoor world, Untitled (Clear) ultimately symbolizes, metaphorically, the separation between the private and public realms of life. While the human form is physically absent from the work, its ghost-like presence is made stronger by its exclusion.
