Getting extremely hard to find and one of the more desirable items of ancient Egyptian art! Solid limestone carved lid from a canopic jar. Dating to the 26th Dynasty -- 664 to 525 B.C., this jar is in the form of the jackal-headed god Duamatef. The covers of the four canopic jars bear the heads of the four sons of the God Horus whose duty was to guard the organs of the deceased. The God Imsety, with the human head, was the guardian spirit of the liver; Hapy, with the head of a baboon, was responsible for the lungs; Duamutef with the head of a jackal, watched over the stomach, and Qebehsenuef, with the head of a falcon, was the protector of the intestines. By the Late Period most canopic jars were placed in the tombs more for show than to actually inter the internal organs, as was undoubtedly the case with this vessel. 4-1/8"D x 3-3/8"H, in excellent condition with single repair across snout and small chipping at the base. Ex- private Paris, France Collection. A VERY cool thing!
