Circular Disk with Two Lizards>Q
Quimbaya
A.D. 400 - 1000
Gold, Weight 16 grams
Diameter 3 ½ in.

Two vertically-oriented repoussé lizards fill much of the disk. Feet and eyes are carefully detailed, and a row of minute bead shapes follows the spines. Above the pointed noses suspension holes have been punched, and above these double horizontal bands lie below a row of beading. At either side arrow shapes meet the widest part of the lizard bodies. These are formed of three bands bordered inside and outside with beading. A half-inch crack is just to the center of the proper left lizard's tail, and there are small cracks at the snout tip and mid-tail of the proper right lizard as well as a barely visible crack running up its tail from the lower edge.

Provenance
Bonhams & Butterfields, San Francisco: sale 7546E, 14 June 2004, lot 1014, pp.6-7
