Queen of Great Britain and Ireland (born 1819) from 1837 until her death in 1901. Her more than 63 years on the throne remains unmatched in the history of Great Britain and ranks her among the longest-reigning monarchs of any nation in modern times. Impressive 7.25 x 11 W & D Downey Imperial portrait, signed in fountain pen at the bottom of the image, “Victoria R. Dec. 25, 1891. With best wishes for Christmas.” Float mounted above a suede backing and framed to an overall size of 14.25 x 19.75. In very good condition with silvering to the darker area, and chipped corners, mild toning, and scattered soiling to the mount.

The young Victoria is the individual credited with the modern day Christmas celebration as a hallowed family holiday. When she came to the throne in 1837. Christmas Day was just another day for all but the rich and noble—but the new monarch and her husband, Prince Albert from Germany—brought with them some Christmas magic and gave crucial royal impetus to a journalistic call for a new spirit of Christmas harmony and reconciliation. Their family initiative was to be contagious across an expanding Empire in the years to come. A fond remembrance from the greatest cheerleader of Father Christmas!
