Margaret of Valois (1553–1615) was Queen of France and of Navarre during the late sixteenth century. Rare vellum manuscript DS in French, signed “Margaret,” one page, 21 x 8, August 21, 1602. Untranslated. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, a few edge tears and horizontal cuts above and below the signature, and light staining. Daughter of Catherine de Medici and King Henry II, and the sister of three kings—Francis II, Charles IX, and Henry III—Margaret herself was a queen twice over, having married King Henry III of Navarre who later becamse King Henry IV of France. An exceptional document from one of Europe’s most highly connected queens.
