[Quasi-War With France] Aaron Ogden Endorsement Signed "Aa Ogden DQMG" on the verso of a manuscript Document Signed of one Major Denman. One page, 8" x 6.5", [Elizabeth, N.J.], July 31, 1800, a receipt in the holograph of Elias B. Dayton (the brother of Jonathan Dayton and son of Elias Dayton of Revolutionary War fame) for "...freight of Schooner to New York from Eliz[abet]h Town, with public stores..." At the bottom, Denman signs in receipt of the money. Ogden's endorsement on verso (in another hand) notes that "The within service was performed after the disbanding of the army under the General order for that purpose by my direction."

During the undeclared naval war between the United States and France (1798-1800) stemming from the fallout of the XYZ Affair, the United States raised a provisional army and increased the naval forces to counter a possible French invasion. The army never saw action on the battlefield and this document concerns the disbanding of that army, three regiments of which were encamped at the "Union Cantonment" in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. Documents concerning the army during the Quasi-War are scarce on the market reflecting how little we know about this force that was under arms for nearly three years as the United States teetered on the precipice of war with France. The army, under the control of Alexander Hamilton as Inspector General, was disbanded in the spring of 1800 by Thomas Jefferson. It would be the last public office Hamilton would ever hold. Aaron Ogden (1756-1839) participated in the American Revolutionary War and was wounded at the Siege of Yorktown in 1781. He would later serve his state of New Jersey as a U.S. senator and as its fifth governor. He was a colonel in this provisional army and deputy quartermaster general at the time of this document.
