Inscribed inside this image case, behind photo, is "John Angstadt Taken at Miamiville Jan 24th 1862". Research has shown that John Angstadt was a member of the 14th Ohio Light Artillery, enlisted on August 20, 1861 and died during the war on May 12, 1862 at Louisville, Kentucky. So, he served 9 months before his death and this photograph was taken about midway through his period of service.

The 14th Ohio Light Artillery was organized in Cleveland, Ohio to serve for three years. They would fight at Shiloh, Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain, Siege of Atlanta and Nashville.

This is simply the finest 1/4 plate tintype of an identified soldier I have ever seen! His crossed cannon insignia is clearly visible on his kepi, his eagle rectangular belt buckle can be seen and he holds a beautiful sword across his lap. Red piping can be seen on his uniform as well. This comes in a very nice thermoplastic case that does have some chips, most notably at the closure where there is also a crack. Overall, an outstanding collectible!
