Quarter Plate Tintype of Armed Union Soldier & Flag,
Quarter Plate Tintype of Armed Union Soldier & Flag,
an unknown Maine photographer documented by his use of a carved wooden “US” oval plate prop worn over the rectangular belt plate to effect a positive “US” in the finished photograph. This photographer is also recognized by the use of a partially bunted flag always extending from the left field. The infantry subject wears an unusual frock coat with cloth shoulder straps and gauntlets. The soldier’s distinctive headgear looks like a tasseled fez or smoking cap. Tucked into his belt are a Smith & Wesson #2 revolver and 1849 Colt with light colored bone or ivory grips. Housed in a complete composition case.
The image suffers from low contrast and is on the dark side. The plate shows numerous tiny surface scratches and abrasions. About GOOD.
