Location:6270 Este Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio, 45232, United States
unidentified 2nd lieutenant of the Washington Greys wearing both shoulder straps and dress epaulettes on dark single breasted frock coat with cuffs trimmed in double row of gold lace. His kepi bears the brass letters WG within a wreath. The officer holds a popular M1850 Ames militia staff sword with a buff colored belt rig featuring an uncommon two-piece round US plate (see Gavin Figure 41, p. 61). The old 8th NYSM traces its lineage to a company of New York City’s elite formed in 1786.

With the onset of war, the Greys entered Federal service for three months on April 21, 1861, attached to Porter’s Brigade of Hunter’s Division. On July 21, the regiment fought at Bull Run suffering 8 killed, 17 wounded, and 13 missing before mustering out August 2nd. As the 8th NYNG, the regiment was called into emergency service during the summer of 1862 and again during Lee’s invasion of Pennsylvania. Coincidentally, this bearded officer bears an uncanny resemblance to the captain standing fifth from left in the published group shot of Washington Greys by Brady found on p.59 of Gavin’s Accoutrement Plates.

Condition: Plate is EXC. with strong clarity. Housed in mint black gutta percha case with high relief bounty of fruit motif.
