<B>Quarter Plate Tintype of Armed Union Soldier (Krainik 27/49), </B></I> ca. early 1860s, this fine stalwart wears a nine-button blue shell jacket accented with the red piping associated with artillery. His waist, however, is encircled with a Model 1851 sword belt rig and he appears to be holding a Model 1860 cavalry saber in his left hand. It is quite likely that this weapon, not being an artillery saber, was merely a photographer’s prop. The backdrop consists of a painted camp scene complete with tents, caisson and tinted American flag. A faint oval outline on the photograph suggests that the image was originally under a different mat. Some spidering on the emulsion and uneven surfaces. The scarce thermoplastic case housing the image promotes patriotism on its lid with an eagle / shield device amid piles of arms, <I>Krainik 27</B></I>. The back of the case, <I>Krainik 49</B></I>, is embossed with a bud-filled urn.
