<B>Quarter Plate Daguerreotype of Elderly Couple (Krainik 17),</B></I> ca. 1850s, behind a plain scalloped brass mat and housed in a scarce thermoplastic case embossed on both sides with “The Sweet Potato Dinner”, <I>Krainik 17</B></I>. The case’s decoration shows South Carolina’s beloved “Swamp Fox”, Francis Marion, inviting a visiting British officer to partake of the Americans’ meager rations during the Revolutionary War. This scene, symbolizing the belt-tightening resolve of the Patriot cause, was based on a painting by John Blake White of Charleston. The daguerreotype within fittingly shows two aging Americans who were youngsters during the late 18th century. They each clasp an emblem of advancing age- she a pair of spectacles and he a cane.
