Quarter Eagles 1861 Old Rev PCGS MS62

Quarter Eagles 1861 Old Reverse. PCGS graded Mint State 62. Pretty rose-sunset toning rests atop surfaces which nearly merit Choice classification. Contact marks are few and inconspicuous. Feathers on the eagle's left leg lack strong definition, but all other engraved features are fully struck, or nearly so. Die clashing is evident on both sides.

The so-called "Old Reverse" utilized an 1859 or earlier die, characterized by larger letters and arrowheads. Few coins were struck using the renewed old reverse die, and today survivors are recognized rarities within the series. While there was a wave of coin hoarding at the outbreak of the Civil War, particularly gold, no appreciable quantity of this important variety escaped circulation and eventual melting. Today, few exist in all grades and only a handful of Mint State examples are reported. This example ranks close to the finest. PCGS has graded none higher than "64." Estimate $4,500.00-$5,500.00
