<B>Quaker William Dillwyn Autograph Letter Signed,</B></I> one page, 7.5" x 12", Philadelphia, August, 20, 1762, to John Smith, with a lengthy and interesting postscript commenting on Indian captives. He writes, in part: "<I>The Indians have given up about 18 Captives at Lancaster - who seem'd to leave the Indians with much regret - They have agreed also to give up all that remain among them to such as the Governor shall appoint at Pittsburgh - I hear that a Trade is to be open'd and regularly carried on by the English with the Shawanese (and I suppose with the Delawares, tho they did not so earnestly desire it.) Tis' uncertain when the Treaty will end as the manage their affairs but slowly.</B></I>" Small tears caused by opening of wax seal, including a two inch tear that has been mended with archival tape, very dark ink, lightly toned and in good condition. <BR><BR>William Dillwyn (1743-1824) was born in Philadelphia. He was an ardent abolitionist and went to England in 1774 to campaign against slavery. He eventually settled in England, but would continue his abolitionist work worldwide, including fighting for the rights of slaves in the West Indies. <I>From the collection of Henry E.
