Antique cotton four poster quilt with applique and cross
stitch. It is decorated with grape vines along the skirts and
bunches of grapes on the body. Wreaths are blind quilted
throughout. The stitching is tiny, even and dainty. The
back is white.

The quilt has stains and some frayed edges. It's worn in
one place as shown in photo. The white is yellowed with age and
the colors somewhat faded. It needs a professional cleaning.

Measures (inches) approximately 83 x 82

If the cross stitched words are a signature, and we believe
they are, this quilt was stitched by Emily H Clark and dated
May 8, 1851. The place of creation is given as simply Canton or
maybe Ganton.
There are Cantons in Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts,
Mississippi, New York and Ohio. The last two are the most likely
for this quilt. We purchased this quilt in New York state.
