Beautiful, thin and lightweight, this early Qingpai (or Yingqing) Celadon is 6-7/16" across and 2-5/16" tall. The gently curving interior is moulded (carved is less-likely?) with a pair of high-relief Phoenix birds in full plumage cavorting on opposite sides. A highly desirable Jingdezhen product of very white body clay, a smaller, shallower dish with similar inside treatment is shown in Plate 38 of "Ceramic Finds from Jingdezhen Kilns", The Fung Ping Shan Museum, University of Hong Kong, 1992 and dated to the 12th C. Excavated near Butuan, Agusan del Norte, Mindanao, the Philippines about 1975, A perfect example....and exquisite is the best word to describe it.
