QARAKHANID: Ahmad b. Mansur, 1018-1019, AR dirham (3.21g), Bukhara, AH409, A-3316, Kochnev—, Zeno—, citing Ahmad b. Mansur in the obverse margin, before the city name, the caliph al-Qadir in the obverse field, with Arslan Khan (=Mansur b. 'Ali) and the Ilek al-Mansur (=Muhammad b. 'Ali) on the reverse, pierced twice and filled, bold VF to EF, RRR. Unpublished type, being the first known example of Ahmad b. Mansur struck at Bukhara. The only other reported coin of Bukhara dated AH409 is a copper fals citing only the Ilek (Zeno-143334). The unusually elegant style suggests that this piece was intended as a presentation piece, which would tend to explain why it was once mounted, perhaps as an award piece or an indication of importance.
