QAJAR: Fath 'Ali Shah, 1797-1834, AV toman (6.14g), Dar al-'Ibada Yazd, AH1213//1214, A-2859, type S1, nice strike, reverse in ornate lobated square within circle of pearls, Extremely Fine, R. Type S1 was frequently dated on both sides, and mismatched dates are not uncommon. The mintmasters were loath to discard a still functional die, and there was no legal reason for alterating the date, though recut dates are also found, on many gold and some silver pieces of Fath 'Ali Shah.AH1213-1214 corresponds to June 1798 to May 1800, just when date-recutting reached its zenith in the United States.
