QAJAR: Fath 'Ali Shah, 1797-1834, AV toman (5.76g), Dar al-Saltana Tehran, AH"122", A-2863, type T1, excellent strike, minor die break near the date on the reverse, Extremely Fine, RRR. The obverse is somewhat similar to type S1, naskhi calligraphy and horizontal line across, whereas type S2 employed the nasta'liq calligraphy, as on the silver type B (this style is unknown for silver). The date "122" could be either 1220 or 1221, but 1221 is more likely, as the engraver might have confused the first letter alif of al-sultan with a number "1", and engraved only "122" on both the obverse and reverse dies.Until recently, only one example of type T1 was known, also Tehran and described as AH1221, but without description (Tübingen collection). Recently, a few examples of this type struck at Shiraz and just this one of Tehran were discovered. It is possible that a few more specimens exist, without legible dates, and misdescribed as type S1.
