Esteemed Russian composer (1840–1893) whose colorful, dramatic, and expressive works represent the epitome of the Russian Romantic tradition and take a place among the most beloved staples of the concert repertory. Very rare and boldly-penned AMQS on a light green album page. Tchaikovsky pens three intricate bars of music from the opening of the fugue from the first movement of the Suite No. 1, and signs below, “P. Tchaikovsky, London , 19 Apr. 1889.” Matted and framed with an engraved portrait, to an overall size of 11 x 16. In fine condition, with a central vertical fold passing through the music and a single stroke of signature, and some mild edge toning.

Tchaikovsky had conducted the previous day at the St. James’s Hall in London, so undoubtedly one fortunate individual—the strains of Tchaikovsky’s work still ringing in their ears, approached the conductor for a signature...a request that resulted in this desirable exemplar. Tchaikovsky had served as director of the Moscow branch of the Russian Musical Society during the 1889-1890 season, where he invited a number of international celebrities to conduct, including Johannes Brahms, Antonín Dvorak, and Jules Massenet.
