Puebloan Sterling Silver & Turquoise Jewelry
Featured in this lot is this collection of Puebloan Sterling Silver Earrings (8 pairs) including Petite Point & Needlepoint Turquoise and a pair of Sterling Silver and Turquoise cufflinks. "Old Pawn" is a term used for Native American jewelry, made by Native Americans, and worn by Native Americans, not for public production or the tourist trade. These old pawn pieces were taken to a Trading Post, where the items were pawned for a certain amount of money and then redeemed when the sum was paid back. “Old Pawn” Jewelry usually refers to the jewelry of older style as well. The term "Old Pawn" can even be used today, as pieces are still pawned to brokers. If the sum of money given in loan for the piece is not paid back in time, the piece will be marked "Dead Pawn" and put out for sale. Six of the earrings are stud style, one is dangle style, and one is snap on style. The cufflinks have a larger turquoise cabochons. Diné (Navajo) artists were the first to use turquoise in their jewelry because it was indigenous to the area. When the turquoise was mined out, it was imported, but those stones were often softer and treated with resin to make them hard. Old pawn can also trace back to the Zuni, Hopi and other tribes in the Southwest. The condition of this collection is good, a rich patina is exhibited throughout with no obvious signs of damage and shows good overall condition. Collection total weight is 22.7g
