Ptolemaic Egypt. Ptolemy III, 246-222/1 BC, Gold Pentad
Ptolemaic Egypt. Ptolemy III, 246-222/1 BC, Gold Pentadrachm (21.39 g) minted at Alexandria. Diademed and veiled bust right of Berenike II. Reverse: Cornucopiae bound with fillet; on either side, star; beneath, monogram resembling Christogram. Sv. 962 (plate XXIX, 17); SNGs --; BMC --. Very rare; artistic portrait. Extremely Fine.

This wonderful gold coin, struck by Ptolemy III, portrays his wife, Berenike II, who effectively ruled the kingdom while Ptolemy was on the battlefield. This particular variety (with this reverse monogram) is missing in most all collections, both public and private; it was known to Svoronos from only one specimen, which was in the Consul Weber collection, auctioned in 1909.
