The cartridges were paper tih a primer deep inside. Whe the cartridge was loaded , the bolt closed and the rifle fired, a long needle punctured the cartridge and ignited the primer inside the cartridge. Gas sealing was not great, fouling was a problem, and the black powder corroded the needles. However, the rifles revolutionized the warfare. This is the updated versin, the 1862 Infantry rifle, which was the standard arm of the Prussian soldiers in the 7 weeks war against Austria and in the Franco Prussian war.
