Prussian Proofed Providence Tool Company Peabody Patent Breech Loading Rifle

Manufactured circa 1866-1871, the Providence Tool Company originally developed the Peabody in anticipation of American military contracts, but the close of the Civil War led to most of the rifles being sold overseas. Blade front and folding ladder rear sights. The top of the receiver and barrel at the breech are marked with a Prussian (German) "crown/V" signifying the rifle was captured by the Germans from the French during the Franco-Prussian War in 1871. Below the "crown/V" on the receiver is also an "S", significance unknown. The left side of the receiver marked "PEABODY'S PAT./JULY 22, 1862/MAN'F'D BY/PROVIDENCE TOOL CO./PROV. R.I.". Single letter proofs are present on several components. Smooth straight wrist stock, with 2 "U" marked barrel bands, a small oval "WC" cartouche on the left side of the wrist and a smooth buttplate.

Very fine overall, with 70% of the original blue finish, showing the start of a brown patina overall, with light edge wear and scattered spotting. The frame and lock retain 60% original case color. Stock is also very fine, with some minor chipping along the edges and scattered pressure dents. Mechanically very good.
