Prussian Cavalry Enlisted Saber, 1834. Germany, model year 1811, manufactured 1834. Steel birds' head pommel and back strap with "ears"; carved wooden grip with black leather wrapping. Steel D-shaped guard and langets; knuckle bow pierced on top for sword knot. Single-edged curved blade with fuller and ricasso inscriptions "1834 178"; on reverse langet "O II 3 178". Inscribed with maker's "Schnitzler & Kirschbaum, Solingen." Steel scabbard with two carrying rings. Drag inscribed "S & K". On mouth of scabbard, "O. II. 3". Scabbard bears surface rust, shallow dent, and light pitting. Same on hilt and guard. Slight pitting on lower portion of blade. This is the so-called "Blucher-Sabel," modeled after the British Light Cavalry Saber model 1796. Schnitzler-Kirschbaum were in business in Solingen 1811-1865.
