Manufacturer: Newton Arms Co Model: 1854 Patent
Prototype, possibly one-of-a-kind breech loading single shot rifle designed by Abner N. Newton of Richmond, Indiana c.1854. The rifle has a rifled octagon barrel with an under-lug that supports two nickel silver ramrod pipes. The barrel has a dovetail mounted nickel silver front sight and buckhorn rear sight. The rifle has a two-piece silver plated brass receiver. The receiver has a sliding bolt with flat-top and external hammer. The rifle has a two-piece iron trigger guard, single iron trigger and brass silver plated crescent buttplate. The stock and forearm are oil finished black walnut. The wedge fastened forearm has nickel sliver oval wedge escutcheons and a nickel silver tail pipe. The stock has a small oval cheek-piece. The rifle is fitted with a hickory cleaning rod with nickel silver tip. The left side of the receiver is engraved: "A.N. NEWTON's/PATENT/JUNE 27TH 1854" in three lines. The rifle appears to have been designed to use a self-contained cartridge similar to the Volcanic "Rocket-Ball" and is loaded by manually moving the bolt/bolt cover to the rear, inserting a cartridge, closing the bolt and cocking the hammer. When the trigger is pulled the hammer moves the bolt forward with sufficient force to strike the primer and fire the cartridge. The rifle is accompanied by a copy of a U.S. Patent Office letter that describes "IMPROVEMENTS IN CARTRIDGES" submitted by Abner N. Newton of Richmond, Indiana, on March 20, 1855. The patent letter and attached drawing describe a case less cartridge in which the propellant is part of the bullet. The Newton rifle was apparently designed to fire this cartridge. Although the rifle bears some resemblance to the Volcanic and Henry lever action rifles it is a far less sophisticated design which lacks a magazine and requires the bolt and hammer to be manually operated. This rifle may be the only Newton Breech-Loading Rifle extant.

Serial Number: NSN
Condition:
Very good. The rifle appears to be complete. The barrel and under lug have a deep brown patina with scattered patches of surface discoloration. The receiver and buttplate have most of the original silver plated finish with scattered minor scratches and handling marks. The engraving on the left side of the receiver remains crisp. The iron hammer and trigger guard have a dark brown patina. The stock and forearm are very good with a few minor handling marks. The action does not function well and requires repair. This is a unique example of a one-of-a-kind experimental breech-loading rifle. Writer has never seen one of these!
