French dramatist, historian, archaeologist, and short story writer (1803–1870); one of his stories was the basis of the opera Carmen. ALS in French, signed “Pr. Merimee,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 8, personal letterhead, October 17, 1834. Untranslated letter to the botanist Jacques Cambadesses. Recently appointed as the inspector of the Historical Monuments, Merimee describes the region of Arles in the south of France, noting that he has also seen “three ladies from Arles from head to toe.” In fine condition, with some rippling to bottom edge, a partial separation to vertical mailing fold, and slight show-through from writing to opposing sides.
