NOTE:, Born near Petersburg, Virginia in 1786, Scott served in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War of 1832 and in the Seminole and Creek Conflict of 1835. He became general-in-chief of the Army in 1841. Five years later, he led a campaign in the Mexican War. In 1852, Scott unsuccessfully ran for President for the Whig Party. Known as "Fuss and Feathers" because of his punctiliousness in decorum and dress, Scott was an associate to every President from Jefferson to Lincoln. His public career spanned nearly fifty years.
