Private Collection, New York
In 1860, Gifford spent most of July and August in the Catskills, probably staying at Brackett's boarding house in Kauterskill Clove while he drew and sketched familiar landmarks. View of the Catskills demonstrates the artist's fluency with the brush in directly capturing the effects of sunlight within a disciplined palette of yellows, roses, greens, and pale blues. The one contrasting color note in the painting is the tiny figure in a bright red jacket perched atop the foreground outcropping, whose quiet meditation on the beauty of the natural world pays homage to the work of such important 19th Century luminaries and proponents of the sanctity of the American wilderness, Thomas Cole and William Cullen Bryant.
We are grateful to Dr. Bruce Chambers for cataloguing this lot.
